Schirrmacher introduces his Book Coffee Breaks with the Pope to Pope Francis

(Bonn, 24.06.2016) Thomas Schirrmacher, Chairman of the Theological Commission of the World Evangelical Alliance (WEA), introduced his new book Coffee Breaks with the Pope: My Encounters with Francis in the course of a meeting the Pope held with Evangelical and Pentecostal leaders from the USA.

The Pope, who speaks German, reacted to the book cover with the words: “Coffee breaks with the Pope. That is funny but accurate. What is important, however, is that you continue to pray for me every day.”

The book contains over 100 photos, some in color. The book also contains numerous photos released for the book by the papal photographer.

Members of two large theological discussion forums between Evangelicals and Catholics in the USA participated in the meeting. Among them was the Canadian Geoff Tunnicliffe, previously the General Secretary of the WEA and currently the Chairman of the Christian Media Cooperation in the USA. The meeting included an almost three hour question and answer session in which the Pope had what were sometimes very critical questions posed to him.

The pastor of the Pentecostal church in Caserta, Giovanni Traettino, and Thomas Schirrmacher both participated from Europe upon the request of the Pope. The Pope apologized to all Pentecostals for persecution by Catholics at a worship service in Traettino’s church in Caserta in July 2014, and he called upon all Catholics to no longer call Pentecostals sectarians.

From the papal side, only Cardinal Kurt Koch, the President of the Papal Council for Promoting Church Unity (PCPCU), participated. At the beginning, Schirrmacher led a discussion with Koch on the future of the cooperation between the PCPCU and the World Evangelical Allianz and set further meetings with the Papal Council and Pope Francis.
